Well, we knew Gearbox was announcing something new and Borderlands-y today at Summer Games Fest, but I didn’t expect it to abandon the Borderlands brand altogether. We just heard the announcement of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a new game that, yes, stars one of the most iconic characters from the last two Borderlands games, but as voice actress Ashly made it clear. Burch on stage with Geoff Keighley, it’s technically do not a Borderlands game, and its own thing.
The game also stars Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, and Wanda Sykes, and returns to the medieval theme we had with Assault on Dragon’s Keep, the D + D-inspired Borderlands 2 DLC. But it looks like the game has fundamentally changed on a few levels.
Although he is still classified as a “plunder shooter” implying that there will always be heaps of colored weapons and the like, but as Burch revealed, it changed the mechanics like the launch of spells, definitely something we’ve never seen in Borderlands before, and she says you can customize your character. I don’t know if this is just cosmetically, or if we are entering an era with real armor with stats and perks in the Borderlands franchise. It also looks like there will be a new focus on melee weapons, another first for the series outside of special abilities.
There are a lot of things we don’t know. We are seeing a character that appears to be playable fighting a dragon, but we don’t know yet if it will be a multi-class based game, based on the information we have, like the other Borderlands games. I imagine so, but no official word on this, or whether Tiny Tina herself would be playable for the first time.
There is also the question of what the scope of this game will be compared to a “real” Borderlands sequel (which Gearbox would also be working on), or how it would compare to a past quasi-Borderlands game like the Pre-Sequel. .
I find it interesting that they really push this as a separate IP with new mechanics, even though the art style and even the characters intersect. I want to see how fundamentally different this is going to be from a real Borderlands game, but needless to say, I’ll check it out when it arrives, which is early in 2022.
I’ll be fishing for more on this and will update when I find something good.
Update: A bunch of additional information about Gearbox’s Wonderlands via email. It is multi-class like Borderlands, strengthens melee weapons:
In this high fantasy epic on the looter shooter genre, players can create and customize their own multi-class heroes as they loot, shoot, slice, and fight their way through eerie monsters and treasure-filled dungeons in a quest to stop the tyrannical dragon lord. Bullets, magic, and broad swords collide in a chaotic fantasy world brought to life by the all-unpredictable Tiny Tina, who sets the rules, changes the world on the fly, and guides players on their journey.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a full standalone experience with a rich, story-driven co-op campaign for up to four players, as well as repeatable end-game content. In a brand new trailer released today, 2K and Gearbox showcased the game’s unique themes, fantastic setting, and celebrity cast.
