CWG 2022: Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula reach quarter-finals women’s singles | News about Commonwealth Games


Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games table tennis event in Birmingham on Friday. Batra steamed Australian Jee Minhyung 11-4 11-8 11-6 12-10 to secure her place in the quarterfinals. The 27-year-old star sailor will now face Singapore’s Jian Zeng in the final eight clash tonight.

Sreeja, on the other hand, played a nerve-wracking encounter against Wales’ Charlotte Carey to secure herself a last eight berth.

The 24-year-old toiled hard but held her nerves to beat Carey 8-11, 11-7, 12-14, 9-11, 11-4, 15-13, 12-10.

Sreeja will face Canadian Mo Zhang in the quarterfinals, which will also be held later tonight.

Earlier in the day, both Manika and Sreeja also reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals.

Batra and mixed doubles partner Sathiyan Gnanasekaran humiliated Nigerians Olajide Omotayo and Ajoke Ojomu 11-7 11-6 11-7.

The two will face Javen Choong and Karen Lyne from Malaysia in the first quarterfinal on Friday.

Sreeja and her partner Achanta Sharath Kamal, on the other hand, came from behind to beat Malaysian Leond Chee Fang and Ho Ying 5-11 11-2 11-6 11-5.

They will face home favorites Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho in the second quarter-final on the same day.

Meanwhile, Reeth Tennison bent to women’s singles after going to Singapore’s Feng Tianwei in a round of 16.

Singaporean Tianwei proved too strong for Tennisson and the latter was beaten with T 11-2, 11-4, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4.
