Murali Sreeshankar won the silver medal in the men’s long jump at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games with a best jump of 8.08m. He accomplished the feat with his fifth jump, having spent most of the final out of the medal spots. Laquan Nairn from the Bahamas won the gold medal. Nairn also had a best jump of 8.08m, but his second best of 7.98m was better than Sreeshankar’s 7.84m.
According to the rules, if two jumpers are tied at the same distance, the one with the best second best attempt will be ranked first.
Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) from South Africa took the bronze.
The other Indian in the fray, Muhammed Anees Yahiya, finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97m.
Sreeshankar’s silver was the best among the Indian male long jumpers in the CWG. Suresh Babu had won bronze in the 1978 edition.
In the women’s race, Prajusha Maliakkal won silver in the 2010 Delhi edition, while the legendary Anju Bobby George took bronze in 2002.

On Wednesday, Tejaswin Shankar had won bronze in the men’s high jump thus opening the Indian medal tally for athletics in this CWG.
