Former India U-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand has joined Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League. Chand was chosen in the player draw held on Wednesday. In doing so, he became the first Indian player to sign for a BPL franchise. It should be noted that the cricketers contracted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are not allowed to play in foreign competitions. However, that is not the case with Unmukt, who retired from playing domestic cricket in India after deciding to sign a three-year contract with American Major League Cricket (MLC) in 2022.

Chand had famously led the Indian U-19 team to title victory at the 2012 U-19 World Cup in Australia. He had scored a century in the final and was named Player of the Tournament. However, after the early success, his international career did not go as expected.

Since retiring from Indian cricket, Chand has also gone on to play in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Renegades. Since then he enjoys playing in the T20 league all over the world.

The Challengers selected Chand in the second round from the foreign players category for Bangladesh’s Premier League season, which starts on January 6.

“We picked him (Chand) because we wanted to have an Indian on our team and we can also have a fan base in India,” Challengers owner Rifatuzzaman told media after the design was completed.
