Ferrari has hoped to win a world title on its new engine
Ferrari has worked hard at Maranello to develop a new engine that will put him back on top. As a result of technical regulation issues at the end of the 2019 season, Ferrari had a huge performance deficit for 2020 which was not fully corrected even in 2021 due to development restrictions. Its new engine, dubbed Superfast, would use an innovative new alloy that must be ready by the end of December before the engine development freeze begins on January 1.
The engine which was designed by Wolf Zimmermann and which is currently running on the test bench has also been overhauled by team leader Enrico Gualtieri. As previously reported, Ferrari has reverted to a traditional setup instead of the split turbo and supercharger concept that Mercedes and Honda are using and even Alpine could adopt next year. Ferrari was going in the same direction but returned to a more traditional concept.
The engine will feature a new intake box that will allow a very low and compact six-cylinder in favor of aerodynamics. Its ignition chamber will have very fast ignition times hence the Superfast nomenclature. It will even be equipped with new intake ducts capable of creating turbulent movements promoting the speed of flame propagation for a simultaneous increase in power and an improvement in efficiency.
Ferrari also wants to increase the pressure in the chamber and ensure essential reliability through the use of new alloys. So far on the test bench, the power and reliability targets have not been achieved but Ferrari would not be far from achieving its internal targets.
