The button allows drivers to heat the tires and also shift the proportion of brake balance from the front to the brake or vice versa.
Hamilton accidentally hit the magic button on the brake causing him to lock up in the Baku race
Mercedes has revealed that it will make a change to the steering wheel which caused Lewis Hamilton’s error which shifted the car’s braking bias forward, causing him to lock the brakes when racing in Baku restarted after the red flag. The button in the equation dubbed “brake magic” will be revamped, revealed Mike Elliot, Mercedes CTO and soon to be CTO succeeding James Allison.
“Lewis had done everything right, he put the car on the grid, he turned off the various buttons and settings he needed to turn off, turned on the ones he needed to turn on, everything was ready for a good start the race, Elliott said.
“He had a fantastic start, he stood up alongside Perez and as he and Perez were sort of mixing up the position, Lewis swung and swapping he just clicked. on the magic button and unfortunately he didn’t feel like he did., he had absolutely no awareness that he was going to have a problem. The point he then braked, which was the point normal for him to brake, he was in the position where he shifted all the balance of the brakes forward which put all the load through the front tires and as a result they locked and went from that point on there was nothing he could do but go wide, ”explained Elliot.
Mercedes is known to have a flawless culture and in an interview Elliott credited Hamilton with being nearly second to none and took some of the blame for the mistake.
“I know from talking to Lewis yesterday that Lewis feels part of the responsibility for this, but the reality is Lewis makes so few mistakes and that’s what really sets him apart from some of the other drivers. It’s our duty. to try to give him a car where it is more difficult for him to make mistakes. We have to take our part, see how we can improve it and that is something that we will put in place for the next race ”, did he declare.
Elliot also explained what the Brake Magic button does. He explained that the button allows drivers to get heat into the tires and also shift the proportion of brake balance from the front to the brakes or vice versa – and by doing this via the rims, the tires would also be heated.
