Sanju Samson again failed to contribute with the bat in the recent exciting Rajasthan Royals (RR) final against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday. The RR captain was only able to collect four out of five balls, with his team setting a goal of 185 points. PBKS almost crossed the target on the 20th of their chase, but point guard Kartik Tyagi had other plans. The youngster took two wickets above, dismissing Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda. The wickets proved to be crucial as RR won by two points.
Speaking on Star Sports, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said Samson needs to work on his shot selection if he is to be a regular player for India. The 26-year-old made his India debut in 2015, but has since played in only one ODI and 10 T20Is.
Even in the IPL, Samson got hot and cold on several occasions.
“What drove him down was the shot selection. Even at the international level, he doesn’t open the bat there. He was the second or third wicket. And he’s looking to hit the first ball off the ground. That is impossible. It is absolutely impossible even if you have been in the richest vein of form. You may have to hit it for maybe two or three and get your feet moving and then look to play, ”Gavaskar said.
“This is something he is going to watch out for, because otherwise it will be a waste of such god-given talent. I have always said that a big part of hit selection comes down to temperament. is what separates the men from the boys. And so, for him to continue and be a regular player for India, his shot selection has to be much better, “he added.
Although he has already recorded a century in the 2021 IPL, Samson is seventh in the Orange Cap race with 281 runs in eight games.
In their next game, RR will face the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
