Former JNU student union president and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar, along with RDAM MP Jignesh Mewani from Gujarat, are expected to join the Indian National Congress (INC) on September 28, the news agency reported. ANI Saturday.
Recent reports had said that Kumar had met with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss the matter.
“Kanhaiya Kumar will be an important young face of the party in Bihar and will also have a national role to play,” the news agency said, citing sources.
Congress would develop a strategy for a national movement against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). For this, influential young people have been identified and Rahul Gandhi constitutes a team of these young leaders to counter the strong voting base gathered by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier this year, Jitin Prasad and Sushmita Dev resigned from the party’s main membership. While Prasad joined the BJP, Dev became a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
In order to revive the party and put young faces to the fore, sources said Rahul Gandhi spoke with young leaders, including Gujarat Legislative Assembly (MLA) member Jignesh Mevani.
Sources also told ANI that Congress ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar views recent developments regarding Kanhaiya Kumar’s membership in the party in a negative light.
Meanwhile, some party leaders are also of the opinion that recruiting Kumar into the party may not be beneficial due to his association in the alleged case of wielding “anti-national” slogans at JNU in 2016.
