The Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a major blow in the form of an injury that ruled out the all-rounder Pat Cummins for the remainder of IPL 2022. Cummins played with the ball in their last match, a 52-point win over Mumbai Indians, and his absence would mean their team’s balance would take a hit when they face SunRisers Hyderabad in a bid to keep their playoff hopes alive. With Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Tim Southee having played the last game – and all likely to keep their places – it would open up a chance for KKR to bring in an extra hitter, possibly in the form of Sam Billings. This would see Sheldon Jackson potentially replaced by Shivam Mavi.
Here’s how KKR could line up their playing XI against SRH:
Ajinkya Rahane: Rahane would be under the pump at the top of the order and would like to get a few runs under his belt. He beat slowly in KKR’s last game against MI and scored 25 points from 24 balls.
Venkatesh Iyer: Iyer hasn’t even come close to the standards he set last season. However, after an explosive blow against MI, he would like to follow a constant form.
Shreyas Iyer: Iyer started the tournament well but slowly faded in difficult situations. He will aim to add to his tally of 336 points from 12 matches.
Nitish Rana: Rana stepped up when most hitters disappointed in games. He made sure to finish the games and get KKR over the finish line.
Rinku Singh: Rinku has flourished with the bat recently and would look to continue the good run with the bat. He will also aim to hit deeper with the likes of Russell and Narine following him.
Andre Russell: Russell has been praised for his crisp and striking abilities showcased in this IPL so far. The West Indian giant would be looking to add some quick runs further down the order.
Sunil Narine: Narine mostly faded after showing glimpses of brilliance with the bat and would also aim to enter the wicket column more often. Its saving rate, however, has been splendid.
Sam Billings: Billings could replace Sheldon Jackson in the playing XI. Billings hasn’t had the best of the tournament and could be looking to cement his place against their match against SRH.
Shivam Mavi: The speedster could replace Cummins who was recently ruled out of the rest of the IPL due to injury.
Tim Southee: Southee was crucial in getting the first wickets for KKR and against SRH his national teammate Williamson could be an early target.
Varun Chakaravarthy: Like Venkatesh, Varun’s form dipped which in turn affected KKR’s depth. The mysterious spinner will once again aim to outsmart batters and take crucial wickets down the middle.
