KNEC issues new guidelines to teachers for upcoming special exams

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced changes to the teacher exams for 2023 on Thursday 24 November.

In a statement, the board announced that the changes affected seven teacher education exams, including Upgrade Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (UDPTE), Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE), and Certificate in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) for candidates referenced in previous years.

Other exams include Teacher Certificate for Adult Education (TCAE), Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE), Diploma in Special Needs Education (SNE), and Diploma and Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) for repeaters only.

As per the guideline, all candidates previously referred for ECDE (Certificate and Diploma level), PTE, TCAE, DTE and SNE examinations are eligible to register for the listed subject(s) during the registration period for the 2023 teacher training exams.

Candidates who have been referred for the Primary Education Teacher Exam (PTE), which has been phased out, will be allowed to retake the referred papers for the last time in March and April 2023.

The Board of Examiners announced that it wanted to cancel the exam afterwards.

Candidates previously referred for ECDE (Certificate and Diploma Level) exams, which have now been phased out, will be allowed to resit for the last time in March and April 2025.

Teachers were instructed to upload coursework grades for DTE and SNE exams between March 6 and 17, 2023.

Teacher Training Directors and Sub-County Adult Education and Continuing Education Officers presenting candidates for upcoming exams were asked to adhere to all guidelines.

The calendar is designed to coincide with the 2023 education calendar released by the Ministry of Education.

The first term will begin on January 23, 2023 and last for 13 weeks until April 21, 2023. The second term would start on May 8, 2023, for 13 weeks and end on August 11, 2023.

Students will then resume third semester on August 28, 2023 to November 3, 2023, to clear the way for national exams on November 6, 2023.
