A ceremony was held in Wellington for the first national holiday in Aotearoa for Matariki. We have the latest news on how it is celebrated around the motu.
On a quiet morning from Wellington to Te Papa, the hautapu ceremony was led by Sir Pou Temara and a fan of tohunga.
The cluster of nine stars rose in Wellington a few minutes ago, just before dawn and the rise of the maramataka new year.
It was closed by tohunga from Wellington mana whenua Te Atiawa, Kura Moeahu.
