Barcelona teenage midfielder sensation Pedri has every intention of signing a new Camp Nou contract and snubbing interest elsewhere, according to a report.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will likely be the man most disappointed in the news.
The German boss has been watching the 18-year-old, apparently since 2019.
Mundo Deportivo recently claimed Liverpool were once again eyeing the player, whose contractual situation in Spain remains unresolved.
OK Journal journalist Eduardo Inda then appeared on El Chiringuito (Going through Sports witness) to declare that the reds were prepare an ambitious initiative for Pedri as part of a potentially explosive deal.
Now Mundo report that Pedro, whose deal with Barca is due to expire next summer, is entirely Barca-focused.
Ronald Koeman’s side can activate a two-year option until June 2024. But, according to Mundo, Barca are unwilling to do so given the teenager’s superb progress. Instead, they hope to tie the youngster to a long-term lucrative new deal. And Pedri wants to promise his future at the club.
It only arrived in the summer of 2020 for 5 million euros de Las Palmas, but he was a key player for the Catalan giants in the 2020-21 campaign. He made 52 appearances in all competitions and contributed four goals and six assists.
The Las Palmas transfer fee also depended on a number of add-ons and these have already taken the matter to the €15m mark. And its continuous upward curve could see the deal come to fruition €35m.
Young people ready for cutting roles
Elsewhere, Liverpool Under-23 boss Barry Lewtas gave a hint of two emerging talents making a first-team appearance against Norwich on Tuesday.
The Reds travel to Carrow Road for the second time this season, this time in the Carabao Cup. While Mohamed Salah scored among the goals in the Premier League opener in August, he was able to rest.
In fact, several of Liverpool’s senior stars will likely skip part, if not all, of the game.
They have had a busy week, with 3-0 wins against Leeds and Crystal Palace. Moreover, they played in the 3-2 Champions League win over AC Milan.
As such, the Carabao Cup draw could give some of Liverpool’s young stars a chance. On Sunday forward Kaide Gordon and versatile right-back Conor Bradley were not in the squad.
Asked after the 4-0 loss to the Under-23s at Leeds about the featured duo against Norwich, Lewtas jokingly said (via This is Anfield) to “ask the manager about it”.
He then added “no comment”. Gordon has played for the Liverpool Under-23 twice this term, scoring each time. Bradley has also played twice, right-back, in the middle of his ability to play as a midfielder.
Tyler Morton could also make an appearance for the first team against Norwich. He only played 45 minutes against Leeds.
