World number one Daniil Medvedev lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Mallorca Open quarter-final on Thursday, while second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the last four. Medvedev was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Bautista Agut who avenged his loss to the Russian in the quarter-finals last week in Halle. “I had to play really well to beat Daniil. He’s number one, the last champion here in Mallorca. He beat me a few days ago. I played a really complete game,” said Bautista Agut.

Bautista Agut beat Medvedev once in the first set and twice in the second as he earned a fourth victory in five encounters with the US Open champion.

This defeat marks the end of Medvedev’s season on grass. He is one of many players banned from Wimbledon following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Bautista Agut faces the Swiss Antoine Bellier, 303rd, in the semi-final. The qualifier beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.

Bellier is the lowest ranked semi-finalist since Juan Manuel Cerundolo, then 335th in the world, triumphed in Cordoba in 2021.

Tsitsipas needed three sets to overtake American Marcos Giron.

The Greek saved two break points to start the final set, then broke Giron in the eighth game before claiming a 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3 win.

“It was a lot of work today. It wasn’t easy,” he said.
