Man dies days after being seriously injured in explosion at Chicago’s West Side building


CHICAGO (TUSEN) — The man seriously injured in a construction explosion in the South Austin neighborhood died earlier this week, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The explosion and collapse happened around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Seven others were also rushed to area hospitals – two of them were left in critical condition. They have all now been released.

The age and identity of the victim are not yet known.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown and under investigation, but the apartment building had repeatedly failed annual inspections for the past 12 years, receiving citations in 2017 and 2018 for “failing to repair or replace faulty or out-of-service installed smoke detectors and continuous operation.”
