More than 1,400 US flights canceled Friday

According to FlightAware flight tracking website, more than 1,400 flights scheduled for Friday in, to or out of the US have been canceled as airlines continue to struggle with on-time departures this summer.

In addition to 1,482 cancellations, airlines had more than 7,000 flight delays in, to or from the US on Friday

Of the US carriers, American Airlines had the most cancellations with 263, while Southwest was in second place with 193 cancellations.

Airlines have faced persistent cancellations and delays this summer that has left customers and lawmakers frustrated.

Earlier this week, Democrats introduced the Cash Refunds for Flight Cancellation Act amid the flight disruptions.

The measure would require airlines to give customers cash back if their flights are canceled within 48 hours of their scheduled departure time.

“Enough is enough: Travelers are tired of wasting their precious time fighting the airlines to receive their legally required cash refunds,” Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) said in a statement. “And they are tired of booking flights months in advance, only to face a health scare that forces them to choose between canceling a non-refundable flight or traveling and endangering the health of their fellow passengers.”

The flight cancellations and delays come as the airline industry has seen a rebound from earlier in the pandemic, with people traveling in greater numbers again as pandemic restrictions and fears in the US ease.
