A 16-year-old was arrested and charged with criminal homicide after a stabbing killed another teenager on Monday, Nashville police said.
The stabbing follows a fight that started between two teenagers inside a Walmart in the 3400 block of Dickerson Pike late Monday night, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. Malia Powell, 14, was fatally stabbed in the parking lot near a bus stop.
The victim and the accused teenager, each with their own group of friends, had a brief verbal exchange inside the store before parting ways, police said. The 16-year-old left Walmart towards the bus stop as Powell got into a car heading towards the other group.
The 16-year-old challenged Powell to a fight, police said. The two were fighting when the 16-year-old stabbed Powell in the neck with a penknife, police said.
Powell died in hospital.
The Tennessean is not naming the teenager who is charged because he is underage.
