The Reines de Naples is to Breguet what the Panther is to Cartier or the Serpenti is to Bulgari. It is the brand’s flagship women’s collection, with a design that is instantly recognizable and completely unique. Two new models, one with a deep blue mother-of-pearl dial and the other with white lacquer, feature a new movement that powers a central minute hand that changes position as it revolves around the dial.
Introduced by Breguet in 2002, the Reines de Naples is newer than other classics such as the Panther or even the Chanel J12, but it is inspired by a watch Breguet made in 1812 for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, Napoleon’s sister. thus has a heritage that no other modern collection can claim. The watch Breguet made for Caroline Murat is known as one of, if not the first, wristwatch ever made. The original was a minute repeater in an oval-shaped case.
The minute hand consists of two arms connected at one end yet independent of each other, so they move together but separately. The arms change shape as they move, thanks to a complex set of gears, so as they revolve around the oval-shaped dial they form different shapes, adapting to the shape – stretched out at 12 o’clock and then more rounded at 6 o’clock. hour. As the minutes pass, each arm actually works at a different speed. Meanwhile, the hours are read in a retrograde arc.
The Reines de Naples is usually both decorative and complex. The mother of pearl version (RDN 9835) is set with 161 diamonds on the bezel, lugs and flange (the inner bezel, below the crystal). The folding clasp on the strap is set with a further 28 diamonds and a briolette diamond is set in the crown – which is set at the four o’clock position, a feature of this collection that makes the watch more wearable. It is a limited edition of 20 pieces. The bezel and flange of the white lacquered version (RDN 9838) are set with blue sapphires, with a sapphire briolette in the crown. The folding clasp on the blue alligator strap is set with another 28 blue sapphires. The cases of both are 18k white gold. The movement is the automatic caliber 78A0, with moving silicon components that make it wear-resistant and impenetrable to magnetic fields. It has a power reserve of 40 hours. Prices on request.
