With the T20 World Cup set to begin on October 17, many cricket fans would have expected the West Indies to include Sunil Narine as a last minute change to their squad. The spinner has been in fantastic shape for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the playoff stage of the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2021. He became his team’s star player in the Eliminator against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, taking four wickets and playing a winning stroke of 26 races on 15 deliveries. But West Indies captain Kieron Pollard has confirmed there will be no side changes before the ICC deadline on Friday. Speaking to The US Express News, Pollard said Narine will not make the cut for the flagship event to be held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
“If I add my two cents or my words about how his non-inclusion happened, then it could be turned – just like the way he bowls at those wickets in Sharjah – in all directions. Let’s talk about the fifteen guys we have here right now, which is more important, and see if we can rally with those guys and see if we can defend our title, ”Pollard said.
The all-rounder also mentioned that Narine is his “friend first” and also called him a “world class cricketer”.
“I have no comment on this. Enough has been said about it. I think people have explained the reason for its non-inclusion at this point. For me personally, I know Sunil Narine first as a friend, before an international cricketer. We grew up playing cricket together. He’s a world class cricketer, “he said.
Since the 2021 IPL resumed in the UAE, Narine has also registered 11 wickets in eight games. On the UAE pitches, he recorded just 6.12 more points in the tournament. He will then be seen in action at the upcoming Qualifier 2 Wednesday between KKR and Delhi Capitals (DC) for a place in the final.
