The Mon Commission appoints Mucciola as the county’s next prosecutor

January 25—MORGANTOWN — Gabrielle Mucciola was a 19-year-old journalism student in 2008 when she first showed up at the Monongalia County Attorney’s Office to work as an administrative assistant.

On Wednesday, Mucciola, whose name is Gabe, was appointed by the Monongalia County Commission to serve as county prosecutor for the next two years.

“I’m humbled,” Mucciola told The Dominion Post. “And I’m very excited.”

Mucciola and Ted Nordstrom, two of the assistant prosecutors who serve under Prosecutor Perri Jo DeChristopher, expressed interest in the position after Governor Jim Justice announced in December that he would nominate DeChristopher to a seat on the 17th Judicial Circuit Court following Phillip’s retirement. DeChristopher was re-elected as district attorney in 2020 and is leaving the position with two years left on her second four-year term.

“Of course losing Perri DeChristopher is also winning because we’re getting her as a judge, so that was news that was exciting but also bittersweet,” Mucciola said. “But when we heard that news, I immediately knew that I wanted to at least be considered for that position.”

Mucciola admits that her future plans in 2008 were very much up in the air. Then she began working close to DeChristopher, former Prosecutor Marcia Ashdown, and former Assistant Prosecutor and current Circuit Court Judge Cindy Scott, among others.

“I really knew at that point that I wanted to be a district attorney, especially here in Monongalia County. So I came back as a district attorney after finishing law school and have been hard at work here ever since, so this opportunity is really around .for me,” she said.

Both DeChristopher and Mucciola are expected to be sworn into their new roles on Friday.

Mucciola’s soon-to-be former boss was on hand for Wednesday’s announcement.

“I appreciate the appointment of Ms. Mucciola. I can assure you that the transition will be smooth,” said DeChristopher. “She will be able to get off to a flying start and will be a great representative of our province.”

Commissioner Sean Sikora said both Mucciola and Nordstrom were strong candidates, noting that both are well aware of the standard set for that office.

“I’m very impressed with what you’ve done at the office,” Sikora told DeChristopher. “Seeing Gabe and the energy she brings to the position inspired me to say she is the clear candidate in what she will continue to do to elevate the level of this stature.”

When asked if she plans to hold the seat for the next two years, Mucciola answered without hesitation.

“Absolutely. That’s something I’ll be aiming for in 2024,” she said.
