UNESCO puts Odessa on the list of endangered World Heritage Sites


The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization places Odesa under its symbolic protection as Russian attacks have regularly targeted the southern port city since the full-scale invasion began on February 24.

“As the war is still ongoing, this inscription shows our collective determination to ensure that this city … is preserved from further destruction,” said UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay.

As a major port hub, Odessa has been one of the cities targeted by Russia’s massive missile strikes since October 10, 2022.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 15 Iranian-made kamikaze drones into southern Ukraine on Dec. 10, shooting down 10 of them.

The attacks on Odessa oblast significantly damaged local energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s southern military command reported Dec. 10.
