Sri Lanka beat Australia on Tuesday by four points in the fourth ODI between the sides to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-game series. The match at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo offered a neck and neck fight as there was hardly anything that could have separated the two teams. While it was Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka’s 110 that grabbed the show in the first set of the match, David Warner stole the show in the second with his 99-point shot.

Both players gave their best on their respective shots but Asalanka’s helped his team win the match, while Warner failed to bring his team home.

Chasing a target of 259 runs, Australia continued to lose wickets at regular intervals but a fighting shot from Warner kept them in the chase until their innings came to a disappointing end.

Warner was batting 99 from 111 when Silva’s Dhananjaya rounded the wicket and beat Warner’s outside edge to finally make him lose. It was an in-flight delivery that Warner wanted to play a drive to but he failed to connect his bat with the ball and wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella did a fine job behind the stumps.

Sri Lanka already had a 2-1 series lead and they only needed to win one of the remaining two games. Tuesday’s victory helped the hosts record their first ODI series victory over Australia on home soil since 1992.

Speaking of Tuesday’s game, in particular, Dhananjaya de Silva also contributed with a 60-point shot in over a century of Asalanka. Matthew Kuhnemann, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh claimed two wickets each to group the hosts for 258 runs.

In return, Warner’s shot was in vain as de Silva, Chamika Karunarate and Jeffrey Vandersay each took two wickets to eliminate the guests for 254.
